Foundation Furniture Bank
To many less fortunate families living in poverty across the North Texas area, furniture is a luxury. After paying for food and shelter, there is rarely any discretionary money left, much less enough money to pay for expensive items such as living room furniture, bed sets, and other household items. Many families live in homes with bare walls, no table for meals, no beds for sleeping, and no television for learning about the world outside their neighborhood.
The Foundation Furniture Bank was created in 2009 as a natural outgrowth of the South Dallas Resource Center. The goal of the program is to help families create a comfortable living environment by giving them furniture and other household items. The Foundation hopes that making their homes more appealing will encourage families to stay together and work to achieve a stable future.
As with many of the program services offered by the S.M. Wright Foundation, the demand far exceeds the available supply. Every month the Foundation receives more than 100 applications from families requesting furniture and household items. Applicants must meet the Foundation’s income guidelines and provide a valid social security card and birth certificate for each family member to participate. Depending on the flow of donations, approximately 150 families per year will receive at least one item on their request list. Currently there are over 400 hundred families waiting for furniture.
